Clinics & Services

Ante-Natal Care

Ante-Natal care is now led by our team of Midwives, who work in close co-operation with the GPs. We advise women to try to see one of the midwives at around 8-10 weeks of pregnancy, for initial advice. We advise all women who are trying to conceive, and until they are 12 weeks pregnant, to take Folic Acid 400 micrograms daily, available from any Pharmacy.

During pregnancy, most care is provided at the surgery. Women can be booked to have their baby in either the Queens Medical Centre or Nottingham City Hospital.

Family Planning and Contraceptive Services

We provide a full contraceptive service in normal surgery hours. For women wishing to have an IUCD (coil) fitted, it is necessary to have an initial appointment with Dr Smith who specialises in the fitting of coils.

Emergency contraception is available from the nurses as well as the doctors, and it is important to be seen within 72 hours of any potential contraceptive failure or omission. This service is also available from the Victoria Health Centre and Family Planning Clinic in town, from the Walk In Centre on London Road or from your local pharmacy (although there may be a charge).

Cervical Smears

These important checks facilitate early detection of cancer of the cervix. All female patients between the ages of 25 and 65 should be tested every three years as a minimum, and more regularly if advised.

Younger patients may also be recommended for testing, but women aged less than 25 years do not need routine cervical screening. Appointments can be made with any of the nurses or doctors.

These breast checks are carried out every 3 years and re-call appointments are generated automatically.

Minor Surgery

The doctors undertake minor surgical procedures, such as joint injections, removal of lumps and bumps at the surgery. These need to be arranged with the GPs, who will only perform procedures they feel are suitable. More complicated problems will be referred to Specialists for treatment.

Smoking Cessation Clinics

The Practice actively encourages patients to stop smoking. Smoke Free Life Nottinghamshire is the local NHS service which gives advice and help to those wishing to stop and they have an excellent success rate. It is advised that patients who want help to quit smoking receive professional support, as well as any necessary prescribed medication. If you want an appointment, please ask at Reception.

Child Development Checks

All Children are offered an initial check at 6 weeks. Hearing and further developmental screening is undertaken by the Health Visiting Team.

It is helpful if you can remember to bring your child’s red book in order that it can be completed.

Well Baby Checks

The Health Visiting team run clinics at West Bridgford Health Centre.

Asthma & Chronic Obstructive Airways Disease Clinics

Our nurses have additional training in the management of asthma. Adults with asthma should be reviewed yearly and children six monthly. If you have asthma and are using a blue inhaler on a daily basis, please make an appointment for an asthma review.

Newly diagnosed patients do require longer appointment times, so please ensure you highlight this if relevant.

Vaccination & Immunisation

Vaccinating your child against infectious illness is one of the single most important things you can do to protect their health. Vaccination is recommended for ALL children unless there is a medical contra-indication. The schedule is described in the child’s Red Book but this changes occasionally and the Health Visitor or Practice Nurse can advise when vaccinations are required.
